Understanding the condition
Gallstones are hardened deposits in the gallbladder. Many never cause symptoms. When a stone blocks bile flow, an attack of upper abdominal pain may occur. Ongoing pain or systemic illness raises concern for a complication.
What the evaluation looks for
The symptom pattern, ultrasound and relevant blood tests help distinguish gallbladder pain from other causes. Bring the imaging report and, when possible, the actual images.
How treatment is chosen
Silent stones often need no treatment. Symptomatic stones commonly lead to discussion of gallbladder removal. Surgery removes the gallbladder rather than simply picking out its stones; the expected benefit depends on whether stones explain the symptoms.
Questions worth asking
- Does my pain pattern fit gallstone disease?
- Are there signs of a duct stone or inflammation?
- What changes in eating or bowel habits might occur afterward?
When to seek help promptly
Persistent severe pain, fever, jaundice or repeated vomiting needs prompt medical assessment.
