Understanding the condition
Hemorrhoids are enlarged vascular cushions in or around the anus. Internal and external hemorrhoids can cause different symptoms, including bleeding, prolapse, irritation or a painful clot. Not every anal symptom is a hemorrhoid.
What the evaluation looks for
A history and examination help distinguish hemorrhoids from fissures and other causes. Age, symptoms and screening history influence whether further colon evaluation is needed.
How treatment is chosen
Improving stool consistency and avoiding straining are common first steps. Selected internal hemorrhoids can be treated with office procedures. Surgery may be appropriate for substantial external disease, prolapse or symptoms that persist despite other care. Recovery and pain differ between treatments.
Questions worth asking
- Which symptoms are actually from hemorrhoids?
- Would an office treatment be appropriate?
- What recovery should I expect from the proposed procedure?
When to seek help promptly
Heavy bleeding, dizziness, fever or severe anal pain warrants prompt assessment.
