Understanding the condition
Diverticula are small pouches in the colon. Diverticulitis is inflammation involving these pouches. Uncomplicated inflammation differs from disease with an abscess, perforation, fistula or obstruction.
What the evaluation looks for
Evaluation considers symptoms, examination and, when indicated, CT. The team also considers whether colon evaluation is needed after recovery.
How treatment is chosen
Some uncomplicated episodes can be managed without surgery, and antibiotics are not required for every patient. Severe disease or complications may require hospital care, drainage or surgery. Elective colectomy is an individualized decision based on severity, persistent problems and quality of life—not simply a fixed number of attacks.

- What is the purpose of follow-up colon evaluation?
- Would surgery address ongoing symptoms or reduce a specific risk?
When to seek help promptly
Severe or spreading abdominal pain, fever with worsening illness, persistent vomiting or substantial rectal bleeding needs urgent assessment.
