Understanding the condition
Ileus is impaired movement of the intestine without a physical blockage. It can occur after surgery and may be influenced by illness, medicines or electrolyte disturbances. It can cause nausea, distention and difficulty tolerating food.
What the evaluation looks for
The team must consider a mechanical obstruction or another postoperative complication when recovery is delayed or symptoms worsen. The trend is more useful than a single bowel sound or isolated test result.
How treatment is chosen
Treatment addresses the cause and may include fluid and electrolyte management, medication review and nutritional or decompression support. Specific medicines used in selected motility disorders are not routine self-treatment for postoperative bloating.

When to seek help promptly
Worsening pain, repeated vomiting, fever or increasing abdominal swelling after surgery should be reported promptly and may require emergency assessment.
