Understanding the condition
Colon cancer begins in the large intestine. Bleeding, anemia or a change in bowel habits may prompt evaluation, but screening can find disease before symptoms develop.
What the evaluation looks for
Biopsy establishes the diagnosis. Imaging, pathology and tumor testing help define stage and guide treatment. The location and whether the bowel is obstructed also matter.
How treatment is chosen
Surgery is often part of treatment for localized colon cancer. Chemotherapy or other systemic treatment may be recommended depending on stage and tumor characteristics. The operation, possible need for a stoma and treatment sequence should be explained by the multidisciplinary team.

When to seek help promptly
Severe pain with distention or vomiting, major bleeding or fainting needs urgent evaluation.
