Understanding the condition
Rectal cancer affects the final portion of the large intestine. Its relationship to the sphincter muscles and nearby pelvic structures makes planning different from colon cancer.
What the evaluation looks for
Biopsy and staging tests define the disease. Pelvic imaging and tumor characteristics help the team assess local extent and the treatment sequence.
How treatment is chosen
Care may combine surgery, radiation and systemic treatment. Some selected patients with a complete response may be considered for intensive nonoperative surveillance at experienced centers. This is not simply omitting surgery. Discuss bowel, urinary and sexual function, as well as temporary or permanent stoma possibilities.

- How close is the tumor to the sphincter?
- What follow-up is needed after a complete response?
When to seek help promptly
Major bleeding, severe abdominal pain or symptoms of bowel obstruction needs urgent assessment.
