Understanding the condition
Stomach cancer can present with persistent upper digestive symptoms, anemia, bleeding or unintentional weight loss. Symptoms alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
What the evaluation looks for
Upper endoscopy with biopsy is central to diagnosis. Imaging and sometimes additional staging procedures help determine extent. Tumor biomarker testing may guide systemic treatment, particularly in advanced disease.
How treatment is chosen
Treatment can include endoscopic removal in selected early disease, surgery, chemotherapy and other systemic therapies. Nutrition and the expected changes after stomach surgery deserve specific discussion. Treatment aims may include cure, control or relief of symptoms depending on stage.
Questions worth asking
- Has the diagnosis been confirmed on biopsy?
- What staging or biomarker results are still needed?
- How will nutrition be supported through treatment?
When to seek help promptly
Vomiting blood, black stools with weakness, persistent vomiting or inability to maintain hydration needs urgent evaluation.
